Tempering in the West Midlands

Following the hardening process, steel is often too hard and too brittle for many common or practical uses. The cooling which takes places during the hardening process often leaves internal stresses present in the steel. In order to relieve these internal stresses and to reduce the hardness and brittleness, tempering is required.

Tempering involves heating the component steel to a certain temperature, though in tempering the temperature is not as high as that used in hardening. Tempering always follows hardening, never the other way around. The minimum temperature timing for tempering should be approximately one hour.
